Oghuz Turks - Bayundur Tribe Shirt

Originally from Central Asia around the Aral Sea, the Bayundur tribe migrated westwards, contributing to the Turkification of Anatolia during the Seljuk conquests. The Bayundur had a clan-based social structure and were traditionally semi-nomadic, relying on animal husbandry and being very protective of their Oguz legacy. Yet, they regularly intermarried with the Pontic Komnenos dynasty in Trebizond. Their biggest achievement was the creation and expansion of the Ak Koyunlu Empire. Led by Kara Uthman and Uzun Hasan among others, the Ak Koyunlu created the largest Türkmen state and rivaled the Ottomans and even Mamluks in the quest for hegemony over the Middle East and beyond. It was originally called "State of the Bayundur".   Further, the Bayundur contributed to Turkic oral traditions and literature, including the Book of Dede Korkut. During Uzun Hasan's era, the Qu'ran was translated into actual Turkish for the first time ever.   After the fall of the Ak Koyunlu, many Bayundur members settled in northern parts of Iraq and Syria, and regularly wandered throughout Eastern Anatolia up to the Black Sea within the Grey Nation (Boz Ulus), recognized by the mightier Ottomans.
